Ropemaking – Visitors will have a chance to make rope using a replica of a traditional 19th century ropejack and learn about the importance of rope manufacturing in New England for the maritime world. Knot-tying and lanyards – Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to tie a variety of common knots used on land and at sea, such as a square knot, bowline, and clove hitch, and make their own lanyards to take home. She is a member of The HOTS (Higher Order of Thinking) team of artists that uses ARTS INTEGRATION across the curriculum in public schools throughout the state. The New London Maritime Society is happy to bring the Arm-of-the-Sea Theater’s production of KEEP THAT LAMP TRIMMED ‘N BURNING to the CT Maritime Heritage Festival on Sunday, September 11 at 2 PM, at the Hygienic Art Park! It’s FREE & fun. KEEP THAT LAMP TRIMMED N BURNING is an original theater production featuring live music and larger-than-life mask and puppet characters in a historical drama about the 1869 Hudson River Lighthouse at Saugerties and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. This family-friendly performance is FREE and sponsored by the New London Cultural District at Hygienic Park.

  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Sgott MacKenzie is a multi-disciplinarian. Enjoying being a drummer, painter, lifeguard, blacksmith, sound engineer, writer and illustrator. The Giant Squid and the Seagull drew inspiration from his unborn child, as well as a second book in the series when they turned 5, called The Giant Squid and the Seagull meet Leviathan. Sgott had the pleasure to work with New London first graders to create a companion piece called Still Dreaming based on the same characters further adventures.
